Technology in Hair Transplant Surgery

In most businesses the use of technology improves the service or product and lowers the cost to the consumer. In hair restoration it does the first two objectives but seems to fall short on lowering the cost. We have seen the improvement and availability of Low Level Lasers lower the cost of Laser Hair Therapy by almost half. The same goes with the use of PRP, and in Orlando we have implemented technology that improved hair transplant surgery and lowered cost. Some technology that has been introduced in hair restoration has lowered the expenses for the surgeons, but they label the procedure as a premium service and they charge the hair loss patients more, even though it is costing them less. I do think it’s time that hair loss patients stand up for themselves, I have written in previous posts on how to do this, and also how to protect yourself from a contractual side of things. Technology has lowered the cost of hair transplantation, from marketing, to hiring and training staff, to equipment, it has all been lowered. Why hasn’t the cost of a hair transplant to the consumer gone down. There are a few possible reasons, none of them are real reasons. There are more doctors in each city performing hair restoration, this has lowered the number of patients for each doctor, so to make up for their volume loss, the doctors are charging more. This is related directly to technology, Neograft has made it easier for any doctor to perform an FUE procedure because the technicians are doing most of the work. Another possible reason is that Bosley Medical bought MHR eliminating their largest competitor and allowing them to set the fees, which a lot of private doctors will match or set their fees slightly lower. We have seen the fees of other cosmetic procedures go down, because of competition, but it doesn’t seem to work that way with hair tranaplants. The first solution for the hair loss patient is to stop paying per graft. This action alone would force changes in favor of the patient. It’s not the hair loss patients fault that the hair transplant surgeons are not making as much as they did a few years ago, the patients are not making what they used to. Technology is worthless unless it also lowers the cost to the consumer. The future of hair restoration is supposed to be hair cloning, can you imagine the premium price tag that will go along with it ? Beware of that, or at least don’t be shocked.
